Let’s hear it for the boys – Help us Mark International Men’s Day

post

Are you aware that it’s International Men’s Day (IMD) in the UK on Saturday 19 November 2016? This coincides with International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day.  To help the world mark these two Days, men and women all over the UK are invited to adopt the official International Men’s Day Theme for 2016:  “Talk About Male Suicide”.

The 2016 theme forms part the overall UK theme “Making A Difference for Men and Boys” which is designed to help more people consider what action we can all take to “Make A Difference” by addressing some of the issues that affect Men and Boys such as:

  • the high male suicide rate
  • men’s shorter life expectancy (including all men’s health issues, workplace deaths and homelessness)
  • our collective tolerance of violence against men and boys (including sexual violence and domestic abuse)
  • the struggles that boys can face in getting an education
  • the unique challenges of the father-child relationship
  • the negative portrayal of fathers, and, men and boys

International Men’s Day in the UK provides a fantastic opportunity for you to:

  • Have some serious fun
  • Highlight some serious issues
  • Celebrate Britain’s men and boys in all their diversity

As a day of observance IMD places its focus on that which unites humanity – giving everyone who wants to celebrate International Men’s Day the opportunity to help work towards IMD’s shared objectives which are applied equally to men and boys irrespective of their age, ability, social background, ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, religious belief and relationship status.

To celebrate this IMD the Rocking Ur Teens boy’s conference will take place on 17th November, kindly hosted by Thomson Reuters. 200 teen boys and their teachers will have a day of inspiration, increased aspiration and connection with making social change happen.

Keynotes will be provided by Dwayne Fields Adventurer. In 2010, Dwayne Fields was the first young black Briton to walk 370 miles to reach the North Pole. Now he is setting his sights on the South Pole, Entrepreneur Ben Towers: Multi-award winning young entrepreneur aged 17. (30 minutes), Solicitor Jevanni Jay Letford, Junior lawyer & DJ with entrepreneurial background. Creative soul with an academic mind. Music, fashion, media & tech.

A leadership workshop will be led by Technologists Martin Ijaha & Ezechi Britton. Founders of Neyber takes this simple idea of finance flourishing within a community and brings it bang up to date with smart technology that allows employees to take control of their finances.

Making Good Choices Sessions will be led by Jonny Benjiman In 2007  Jonny was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (a combination of schizophrenia and depression).  He made a recovery from this episode but became unwell again at the end of 2014. He is documenting his  current journey with mental illness in his ‘Recoverlogs’ on YouTube. He wants to break the silence and remove the stigma attached to mental illness, as well as giving hope to those who are suffering that it does get better.
