The wonderful Stemettes will provide an interactive session for the 250 teen girls attending the Rocking Ur Teens conference on the 8th March. Find out more about them below
We are Stemettes, a social enterprise that is inspiring the next generation of girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) by running free events (for ages 5-22), which are lots of fun and always have lots of food. We introduce girls to female role models in STEM, develop their coding skills, pair them up with mentors and help them to build STEM startups over the summer.
Getting girls excited by STEM is important to us because girls deserve their place in some of the most innovative and disruptive careers of the present and future, which can also be very lucrative. Currently females aren’t getting the same opportunities as males when it comes to STEM careers. The other thing is that our economy needs many more people in STEM for supply to meet demand in STEM jobs, with 43% of STEM jobs likely to go unfilled on average. Lastly, it is essential that women are represented in STEM so we bring female strengths and characteristic – such as empathy and listening skills – to these jobs so we improve performance.
I’m delighted to be talking at the Rocking Ur Teens conference because I love talking to young people about the brilliant world of STEM. It’s fascinating to hear the opinions of teenagers, who are exactly the people we need to be going into STEM careers, and use them in our work where possible. In general, Rocking Ur Teens looks like a brilliantly fun event to be involved with and I can’t wait to check it out for the very first time.
